On the Nose
1984-1985
(Retired)
On the Nose was an
extremely short-lived pricing/talent game played for a car. The
contestant was shown four possible prices of the car; one was
right and three were wrong. If the contestant picked the price
that was exactly right (i.e., guessed it "On the
Nose"), s/he won a $1,000 cash bonus and four attempts at a
sporting game. Picking the second closest price offered three
attempts at the sporting game, the third closest price offered
two attempts, and picking the price that was most distant from
the car's ARP offered just one attempt. The sporting games
themselves differed each time the game was played. They included
things such as throwing a football through a given area, hitting
a tennis ball, shooting a basketball, or throwing a dart. If the
contestant successfully completed the task with any of the
attempts s/he earned in guessing the car, s/he won the car. If
not, the game was lost.
On the Nose was an
attempt to duplicate the popularity of Hole In One, but it was
doomed because the events were too difficult to win! Even with
four attempts, a nervous contestant with absolutely no hand-eye
coordination is going to have trouble throwing a football in a
small area. Imagine an 80-year old woman who earned just one
attempt trying to shoot a basketball! Admittedly, Hole in One
offers some of the same challenges, but if the contestant is a
good enough bidder in Hole in One, s/he can putt so close to the
hole that the putt is a gimme. Contestants in On the Nose could
not make the sporting event any easier by guessing the car price
exactly; they only got a higher amount of attempts.
The bizarre sound
effect used when door #2 opened to reveal the car prices was
unique to this game and has never been heard again.

| It's
On the Nose. Yikes! |
We're
playing football today. This is admittedly an elaborate
setup. |
 |
 |
| Here
are the four prices for the car. You have to hear the
bizarre sound effect that accompanies the reveal here. |
Wow!
He hit it "On the Nose"! He wins four footballs
and... |
 |
 |
| ...$1,000
in cash! He has reason to be excited! |
Here's
Bob preparing to give his classic inspiration...toss? |
 |
 |
| Bob
missed his toss, but surely the contestant will get it in
that red hole with four tries! |
Nope!
He missed all four tosses! If you look close around the
football player's right hand, you can see his errant
toss. |
 |
 |
| Here
we are playing basketball...this woman can't make that
basket from all the way over there, can she? |
Oh
yes she can! That jump shot just won her a car! |
