Super Saver

1989 - 1996 (Retired)

Super Saver was an incredibly nifty grocery item game that was unfortunately retired. The contestant was shown six grocery items and false prices for those items. Five of the items had bargain prices, one item had a price above its ARP. The contestant had to pick four items, and if the contestant had saved $1.00 or more after the fourth item, s/he won a bonus prize. The contestant could still win even by picking the item that was above the ARP ("It's still mathematically possible," as Bob would say). Most of the bargain items were around 10 - 30 cents below the ARP, although one was around 50 or 60 cents off.

Super Saver was retired because the little trilons that revealed the item's false price/ARP/difference tended not to turn on occassion...or was it?  The Wikipedia article on this game indicates the game was actually retired because of a single incident involving a losing contestant.  The contestant was unaware that picking the rogue "expensive" item didn't preclude him or her from actually winning the game.  Complaints ensued, the contestant was awarded the prize, and Bob had the game retired to prevent it from ever happening again.

Whatever the reason for the retirement, this is a complete disappointment, because the game was fun to play and the board was completely awesome. It had impressive colors, fonts, and a cool electronic display in the center.

Great! It's Super Saver, with one of the coolest boards ever! She must bank $1.00 or more in savings after four picks with these products.
Given price of the vinegar, $1.19. Actual price, $1.59.
She saves 40 cents! And we put that in the bank.
It's time for her last pick and she's in great shape! She only needs to save 20 cents or more. Given price of the shampoo, $3.99...
Actual price, $3.79. Oh no! She loses 20 cents and loses the game. But it looks so good!
